The main issue with Disney Dreamlight Valley was its lack of Dream Shards, a resource that was so hard to come by that many players, including myself, were being soft-locked out of the game for days on end. Gameloft claims that by adjusting the game’s resource balance concerns and addressing other troubling flaws, the issue has been resolved.
A crucial resource known as Dream Shards will now appear more frequently as a reward for feeding animals, removing thorns, and digging out gleaming earth.
Since Dreamlight Valley is still in early access, part of the fun has recently been diminished by technical issues. According to what I’ve heard and read, the Xbox Series X edition, which I’m currently using with Xbox Game Pass, is in far better shape than the Nintendo Switch version, which is allegedly constantly crashing or glitching out. In the 19 hours I’ve played, I haven’t encountered technical difficulties more than once or twice, which doesn’t strike me as unusual. But that unequal resource spawning has kept me from moving forward.
The community is under a curse that seals everyone within their homes except for goddamn Kristoff, Merlin, and Rapunzel’s mother when I reach one quest line in the game. I need five Dream Shards, which are extremely uncommon, to move further. For reference, I still don’t have any after 19 hours. Only a few thorns spawn each day, unless you’re unlocking a new location, thus you must remove them to have a chance of finding them. I grinded cooking and fishing to earn Dreamlight points to enter a new area because the respawned thorns hadn’t given me any Dream Shards.
view above Fish that has been prepared and fruit cups are all over my home. (Since everyone was trapped inside their homes, I was unable to sell any goods, so I was forced to dump everything on the ground.)
I eventually had enough Dreamlight points to open a new, thorny section after a few hours. But instead of Dream Shards, these thorns only handed me cash and seeds. I had to start earning Dreamlight points once more in the aim of one day discovering five Dream Shards. If I could have done practically anything else in the game, it wouldn’t have been too bad if it had taken more than a week to complete.
But it didn’t take me more than a week to find a fix after searching through the developer’s Twitter feed: Gameloft offered every player 25 Dream Shards to make up for the balance difficulties; my problems are now resolved, and my town is free. Check your mailbox if you’re experiencing this issue because there is nothing in-game that indicates you have mail. Even though the Band-Aid is invisible to anyone who isn’t following Twitter, it is a Band-Aid on a design issue.
Dream Shards shouldn’t be much of a problem now that this update, which Gameloft says will roll out over a few hours, has been made. If they are, however, be aware that your mailbox is also stocked with Dream Shards.
Flowers and other foraged materials have been spawning slowly, too. Gameloft hasn’t indicated whether it’s changed the spawn rates for any other items, but the Night Shard alteration will give many players a lot more flexibility.
