The Oscar-winning author Dustin Lance Black disclosed that he is recuperating from a “severe brain injury” that he sustained around a month ago.
Black wrote in a Monday Instagram post that his injuries had rendered him “out of commission,” without elaborating on how it had occurred.
So I disappeared for a long… I had a severe head injury a month ago that rendered me incapacitated,” Black wrote. “After seeing no progress, my physicians advised me to turn off my brain in the hopes that it might heal. For a creative person who relies on his brain to work, care for, and love people, this has been a difficult and terrifying period. And I now realise how far the journey back will be.
For the 2008 movie “Milk,” Black won the Academy Award for best original screenplay. More recently, he adapted “Under the Banner of Heaven” for FX and Hulu. Black also posted a few pictures from his holiday.
Black closed his letter by saying, “This week my darling, over the top hubby took us to the Greek Islands to make me shut off.” I finally feel comfortable sharing a little bit again, and I can already tell that this trip is a step in the right direction. I appreciate all of your kindness and tolerance. More will follow. Promise.”
On October 19, HBO will debut “Mama’s Boy,” a documentary on Black’s life that is based on his memoir of the same name. (Both CNN and HBO are inside the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella.)
