Ana de Armas, star of ‘Blonde,’ is perplexed as to why the film received an NC-17 rating: ‘I had no idea why that happened.’

Ana de Armas is perplexed as to why ‘Blonde’ received an NC-17 rating.

Ana de Armas is perplexed by the NC-17 rating for her upcoming Netflix film “Blonde,” which is based on the life of Marylin Monroe.

When a film contains gratuitous violence, obscene sex and/or nudity, and harsh language, the Motion Picture Association of America assigns it an NC-17 rating. An NC-17 rating differs from a R rating in that minors 17 and under are permitted to see rated R movies in theatres when accompanied by an adult but are not permitted to see an NC-17 movie at all.

The Cuban actress is perplexed as to why “Blonde” received such a high rating, claiming she has seen films with far more obscene content.

“I didn’t understand why that happened,” she explained in her cover story for L’Officiel. “I can think of a few shows or movies that are far more explicit and have far more sexual content than ‘Blonde.'”

NC-17 by ANA DE ARMAS THE MARILYN MONROE MOVIE ‘BLONDE’ WILL ‘OFFEND EVERYONE,’ SAYS THE DIRECTOR.

While she understands that the film contains some explicit scenes, she believes that those scenes are necessary to tell the story that the filmmakers were attempting to tell.

“To tell this story, it is necessary to depict all of the events in Marilyn’s life that led to her decision. It needed to be explained,” she said. “Everyone [in the cast] knew we had to go to some unsettling places. I wasn’t alone in this.”

De Armas previously appeared in “Knives Out,” but “Blonde” marks her feature film debut. When her casting was announced, Monroe fans criticised the studio for casting her because she speaks English with a Cuban accent.

She didn’t let the criticism of her accent bother her or add to the pressure she was already under, noting that everyone should feel pressure when playing such an iconic figure. She went on to say that her performance was not an imitation, but rather an attempt to provide insight into the icon’s state of mind at the time.

“I am honoured to have Andrew’s trust and the opportunity to pull it off. Anyone, whether a Cuban or an American actress, should feel the pressure, in my opinion “said de Armas

The Marilyn Monroe Estate, whose representative, Mark Rosen, told Variety that while the estate does not sanction the film, “Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity, and vulnerability.”
