Apple introducing Stage Manager to older hardware will help even M1 iPad owners.

With iPadOS 16, Stage Manager will be available on more iPad Pro models, which is a change in policy that should be commended. Apple initially intended to keep the new multitasking function exclusive to iPads equipped with its M1 CPU. Although this feature update has significant negatives, it is positive for the iPads in their original class.

adoption of a stage manager
We are unsure of how many third-party apps will release updates that are optimised for the new feature because Stage Manager and iPadOS 16 have not yet been launched. However, Apple has increased the number of iPads that will support Stage Manager from those that are now in use.

Up until today, only owners of the most recent iPad Pro and iPad Air were impacted by Stage Manager’s app enhancements. Depending on the software, developers may be able to justify not giving features that more consumers could utilise a higher priority than Stage Manager enhancements.

Even while Apple withholds sales figures, the inclusion of the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pros must suggest that a significantly higher number of consumers will actually use Stage Manager.

Will the support for external displays improve?
The removal of external display capability from today’s iPadOS 16.1 beta 3 release is regrettable. This feature is being tabled by Apple until later in the year. As originally intended, M1 and up will still be necessary for external display capability. That is far more logical than completely leaving out the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pros.

This particular feature will be more specialised than the multitasking experience as it requires a monitor, mouse, and keyboard to handle external displays through Stage Manager. It’s also one of Stage Manager’s most problematic features.

It is wise to give external display support more time to bake. Stage Manager is a function that is ambitious by iPadOS standards. Making a favourable initial impression on consumers is crucial if Apple wants Stage Manager to be used and not disregarded.
