Apple provides developers with new beta versions of iOS 16.1 and iPad OS 16.1.

Today, one week after the second iOS 16.1 beta was made available, Apple seeded the third beta of the operating system to developers for testing. The fourth beta of iPadOS 16.1 has also been released, joining iOS 16.1 beta. This beta is on a slightly different timeline because Apple began testing it before iOS 16.1 was released.

The iOS 16 and iPad OS 16 profiles are available for registered developers to download from the Apple Developer Center. Once installed, the betas are made available over the air.

Live Activities is a new interactive notification feature in iOS 16.1 that enables you to monitor events as they happen right from the Lock Screen and, on the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island.

Live Activities cannot be used right now because developers must still update their applications to include support, but it will be accessible once iOS 16.1 is released. An ActivityKit API is available to developers so they may start building their applications.

The update provides the basis for Matter, a new smart home standard that Apple expects to start supporting this autumn, as well as a new Clean Energy Charging feature in the United States that is intended to selectively charge when reduced carbon emission electricity is available.

Apple, Google, Samsung, Amazon, and other tech giants are working on support for Matter, which will enable interoperability between smart gadgets from various manufacturers.

The battery status bar icon’s design was modified in iOS 16.1’s second beta to include a visual charge level indicator. Additionally, it updated the Lock Screen charge indicator, adjusted the battery font, and corrected a copy and paste glitch.

Other new features in the update include a Wallet app that can be deleted, adjustments to the Lock Screen customization interface, and more. For more information, see our feature guide for iOS 16.1.
