Music-streaming service Audiomack opened its Nigeria office five years ago, marking its serious expansion into Africa. Now it is celebrating that anniversary by publishing some big numbers on its growth in that country and continent.

Audiomack says that it has served up 58bn streams of Afrobeats music in Nigeria alone since 2020, as the service grew to 15.3 million monthly active users (MAUs) and 4.9 million daily active users (DAUs) in that country.

The company also said that its annual Afrobeats streams have grown by 258% since 2020, and listed the top playlists, albums, songs and artists on its service in Nigeria.

For example, its flagship ‘Verified: Afrosounds’ has racked up 167m plays over that period, while its most-streamed artist in Nigeria is Seyi Vibez with 1.4bn streams.

“Simply being able to be on the ground and work with as many artists as possible, to know their needs and wants, helped us to scale to where we are today five years later,” said VP of marketing Charlotte Bwana.

Clearly, the fifth anniversary of Audiomack setting up shop in Nigeria is a birthday worth marking. But the timing of this opportunity to shout about its growth there – and by extension in Africa as a whole – is fortunate for another reason.

Earlier this week we wrote aboutchallenges facing Boomplayone of the other key regional DSPs in Africa. Sony Music reportedly pulled its music from that service amid claims by other rightsholders that it has been late with payments.

While that situation remains unclear, Audiomack would be forgiven for seeing this as a useful moment to remind the industry of its success in one of Africa’s key music markets – both in domestic terms, and for exports success.
