Before Stardom With… Periz Enoch

Flaunt Weeekly

What is your educational background like?

I attended State School II Bille in Bille Kingdom, Rivers State, and later Sunshine International School in Onne Eleme, also in Rivers State. Although I dropped out at one point, I am back in school.

How did your journey into gospel music begin?

I’ve always loved music since childhood, so I started in the children’s school choir. I participated in choir competitions, where I discovered my talent and eventually joined the church choir. At that time, in my family church, we had a music director called Mr Siki, who played a crucial role in my journey into gospel music. He mentored and involved me in his ministrations. I owe much of my early music training to him. The first church I ministered in was Gateway International Church in Port Harcourt.

Aside from being a gospel artist, what other creative ventures do you explore?

I also belong to a Christian drama group, where we minister through plays in churches. I discovered my acting gift when I was in the children’s church. We were encouraged to join units where we could explore our abilities, and I found mine in both music and acting.

What were the challenges you experienced trying to combine both aspects of creativity?

It wasn’t easy, as I met people who I thought were more talented than I was. In my early days, I struggled with low self-esteem and nearly quit the industry. However, my love and passion for music kept growing in my heart. This motivated me to devote myself to putting more effort into my calling as a minister and rebranding myself.

Looking back at the past eight years, I’d say it has not been easy carving a niche in the music ministry, where many great icons have laboured, but I am grateful for where God has brought me.

What are the principles that kept you going?

My mother has been an inspiration to me. I always remind myself of her sacrifice and forbearance, especially considering that I was a child who gave her sleepless nights, yet she continued to love and support me. That keeps me going. My love for God also sustains me, as I want to do His will always.

How has fame changed you?

Fame has exposed me to many people. There is both a positive and negative side to fame. While some people come into your life with good intentions, others come with bad ones. This has made me more cautious and aware of where I go, what I say, and what I do because the people I minister to are watching me.

How do you handle your female fans?

I interact with them professionally. As a young man in the music ministry, ladies are naturally attracted to you, so I am cautious and avoid scandals.

Are you currently working on any project?

Yes, I am currently working on a music project, which is set to be released soon. I am also writing my autobiography, intending to share my childhood experience and use it to encourage fellow youths across the country.
