Season 23 of The Voice hasn’t even begun yet, yet real-life pals and on-screen rivals Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson are already feuding. The competition’s two most successful coaches are due to square off in the cowboy’s final season, and after the talk show presenter made a dig at Shelton during an emotional message to her old colleague, the country star has responded. The “God’s Country” singer fired back at Clarkson, and I can’t wait to watch how this friendly feud continues to thrive on our screens.
Kelly Clarkson recognized that he is The Voice’s “ultimate” coach ahead of the March 6 season premiere, which Blake Shelton stated will be his final. Nonetheless, she later remarked that his departure after Season 23 is a “positive for humanity” because we would see less of him. The country singer answered in kind, telling E! News that there was only one way to convince him to stay for a 24th time:
Whoa, Blake Shelton isn’t just referring to the original American Idol winner’s appearance on The Voice, but also to her other ventures, likely including the Emmy Award-winning talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show. She also co-hosted American Song Contest, which replaced The Voice on NBC’s spring schedule in 2022, implying that her college coach was coming for all of her ventures.
I can’t wait to see the music celebrities carry their animosity to the real event if the ribbing amongst the coaches has already begun. The coaches’ shenanigans are always prominent, especially during the pre-recorded portions of the seasons, so I’m sure the Clarkson-Shelton feud will be on full display in the next episodes.
The rivalry between Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton has proven to be a draw for fans. When the “Because of You” singer joined The Voice in Season 14, it marked the first time Shelton faced serious competition in wooing country music singers. In Season 21, the cowboy was compelled to counteract this by repeatedly discrediting Clarkson’s mastery of the genre.
She’s also shown that she can beat him. While Blake Shelton has had nine artists hoist the trophy in his 22 seasons for the highest amount of wins, Kelly Clarkson has won four times out of eight, giving her a 50% victory percentage.
Another reason their feud is entertaining to witness is that there is no genuine hostility between them. The same couldn’t always be said for Blake Shelton’s dispute with former Voice coach Adam Levine, which included F-bombs and threats to crash Shelton’s wedding to Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson relied on the “No Body” singer amid her divorce, celebrating her victories with her Voice family.
Season 23 is almost here, but to tide us over until Monday, here’s a look back at their “sibling rivalry” from the beginning:
If they bring that much intensity to The Voice this season, it will be intriguing to see how rookie coaches Niall Horan and Chance the Rapper manage the competition. The Blind Auditions launch on NBC on Monday, March 6, at 8 p.m. ET, and be sure to check out our 2023 TV schedule to see what other premieres are coming up.
