Blumhouse to Host ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Adaptation, Emma Tammi to Helm the Camera

“Five Nights at Freddy’s” is prepared to be played at Blumhouse. The venerable horror production company has set Emma Tammi (“The Wind”) to direct an adaptation of the popular video game series, set in a Chuck E. Cheese-like children’s restaurant called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, where the animatronic creatures within go on a killing rampage after closing time.

The script is being written by Tammi, Seth Cuddeback, and game designer Scott Cawthon. The movie will be made by Cawthon and Jason Blum through Blumhouse in collaboration with Striker Entertainment. Executive producer Russell Binder is credited.

The horrible, deadly children’s mascots are being made by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The first day of shooting is set for February 2023.

The “Five Nights at Freddy’s” video game series, which debuted in 2014 for PC and consoles, immediately gained a devoted and creative following thanks in part to its novel take on survival horror gameplay. The game puts the player in control of the night watchman, who must stay in their office and use a limited number of blurry security camera feeds and electronic door controls to track the activities of the animals rather than navigating the restaurant or fending off ravaging animatronics. The player effectively wins the game if they make it through five nights and a bonus night (by getting fired). The universe of the game and its macabre mythology were enlarged in subsequent sequels, and a plethora of tie-in novels and other spin-offs helped to further enrich these worlds.

Originally planned for Warner Bros. and Vertigo Entertainment in 2015, the movie ended up at Blumhouse.

In a statement, Cawthon praised the filmmaker, saying, “In speaking with Emma, I thought she had a tremendous understanding of the property and genuinely believed that she could build something that would please the fandom and keep people on the edge of their seats.”

On Wednesday, Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum tweeted about Tammi’s participation and the project’s approval.
