Cameron Diaz will come out of retirement for a new Netflix film starring Jamie Foxx.

The next Netflix original film in which Cameron Diaz will star with Jamie Foxx will mark the end of Diaz’s retirement (which some of us at The Verge apparently never got the memo on). In a tweet with an audio chat between him, Diaz, and Tom Brady, whose 40-day football retirement was notable, Foxx teased the upcoming movie, Back in Action.

Seth Gordon, the director of Horrible Bosses, is directing, producing, and writing the next action-comedy, although Netflix doesn’t say much more about it in a press statement. Brendan O’Brien from Neighbors is assisting with the script, while Beau Bauman from Central Intelligence will serve as producer. The movie’s plot will stay “under wraps,” according to Netflix, and shooting will start later this year. The last time Diaz made an appearance was in the 2014 Annie reboot, which also starred Foxx. Prior to that, the two appeared in the 1999 sports drama Any Given Sunday.

Netflix reported losing subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, despite having 74.58 million customers in the US and Canada and roughly 222 million worldwide. A poll conducted in May found that more long-term Netflix members were canceling their subscriptions, with 3.6 million doing so in the previous three months.

A movie with such prominent names as Diaz and Foxx could aid Netflix in its efforts to attract new members (and keep its current ones locked in). When it was released on Netflix in 2020, Project Power—which also stars Jamie Foxx—was able to draw nearly 75 million views. In addition to The Gray Man, which will be released next month and stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, Netflix also released Red Notice last year starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds.

To offset some of its recent pricing increases, Netflix plans to launch a less expensive, ad-supported tier later this year. In a few nations, it is experimenting with techniques to stop password sharing, and it is also looking into live streams.
