Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicates the 2022 VMA Award to ‘Brother’ Taylor Hawkins.

On Sunday, the Red Hot Chili Peppers received the Global Icon Award at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards (Aug. 28). Following a hit-filled medley of old and new songs, the members took turns on the mic to share their thoughts and gratitude.

 

When drummer Chad Smith took the stage, he had only one goal in mind: to thank his “brother,” late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins passed away on March 25th, at the age of 50.

“I’d like to dedicate this to my brother, Taylor Hawkins,” Smith said, holding up the Moon Person award. Smith dedicated the award to Hawkins’ family as well.

 

Smith’s bass drum prominently paid tribute to Hawkins during the RHCP’s VMAs performance, with “Taylor” written across it within a hawk — a tattoo the Foo Fighters’ drummer had on his arm. The unique design was previously seen during the RHCP’s April performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

 

Unlimited Love, RHCP’s 12th studio album, was released in April. It was the band’s first project since guitarist John Frusciante rejoined the lineup in 2019. The band announced in July that its 13th album would be released this year as well. The album, titled Return of the Dream Canteen, will be released on October 14 and produced by Rick Rubin.

 

Hawkins will also be honoured in September with a pair of tribute concerts presented by the Foo Fighters and the Hawkins family. The first will take place on September 3 at Wembley Stadium in London, and the second on September 27 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

 

The Foo Fighters received the first Global Icon Award at the VMAs in 2021.
