On Sunday, Belgium became the first country in the world to implement such a law, which ensures sex workers are entitled to maternity leave, sick days, pensions, health insurance, formal employment contracts, and safety protections.
The legislation, signed into law on December 1, 2024, was introduced after sex workers protested in 2022, calling for state support after being left out of government aid during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The new law also gives sex workers the right to refuse clients, decline specific acts, or stop at any point during their work.
Employers must meet strict standards, including maintaining clean and safe premises, installing panic buttons, and providing essential items like clean linens.
