Queens rapper Deem Spencer will release his new transitional EP, ‘yung’, on April 11th via drink sum wtr.
An extension of his collaboration with producer Jackson Pittmanwhich yielded last year’s ‘all these crying birds’, the three-track ‘yung’ recalls Deem Spencer’s DIY, free-associative style that coloured his early releases – his “audio diaries”.
“These songs are some of my favourites from my sessions with Jackson,” says Spencer. “Originally, I was saving them for my next album until it was revealed to me, months ago, what the next album would actually be. I’m happy to share these songs now.”
Backed by wonky, stoned beats, the three-track EP showcases the contrasting sides of Deem’s personality; ripe with elliptical observations, subdued hooks and a lyrical style equal parts offbeat and conversational. The first preview comes in the form of ‘Even if it is tho‘an edifying ode to resilience and hard-won freedom.
“Each song, very different in their own respects, presents the qualities of myself I’m most proud of,” he continues.
