Despite testing it, Apple is unlikely to bring Touch ID back to the iPhone.

Beginning with the iPhone X in 2017, Face ID took the place of Touch ID on the iPhone. Since then, there have been a few isolated speculations about Apple possibly reintroducing Touch ID to the iPhone, but nothing concrete has happened.

The return of Touch ID to the iPhone has been tested by Apple, according to a recent Bloomberg story, but it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon.

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple has tested in-screen Touch ID for the iPhone and has thought of integrating Touch ID with the power button, similar to the iPad Air and iPad mini.

However, Gurman feels that even if Apple has tested both of these, it’s doubtful that either will be released “at least anytime in the foreseeable future.”

There have been discussions within Apple over the past few years about putting Touch ID back to high-end iPhones. In-screen Touch ID has been tested by the firm, and it has even been discussed for the power button. At this point, I think Face ID is here to stay and Touch ID won’t be coming back to the top-tier iPhones any time soon.

Gurman raises the prospect that Touch ID might be relocated by Apple to the power button on less expensive iPhones, such the iPhone SE. The separation of Face ID and Touch ID on the iPad would be comparable to this, but Gurman said he hasn’t “heard anything about that actually being in the pipeline.”

9to5Mac’s Opinion
Personally, I would really like to see Touch ID return to the iPhone in the future. Facial ID has improved dramatically over time, especially now that it supports face masks and works in landscape mode. Even now, there are scenarios in which having Touch ID as an option would be beneficial.

As I’ve previously mentioned, having both Face ID and Touch ID on the iPhone has security advantages. For instance, to access really sensitive information, you might need to provide both a Face ID and a Touch ID authentication.

How do you feel? Do you wish Touch ID would eventually return to the iPhone? Tell us in the comments section.
