“Dune: Part Two” Score Seeks An Oscar

Warner Bros. Pictures

Two weeks ago came a report indicating that Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” won’t be in the running for a Best Original Score Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.

An independent review of the acclaimed film’s musical score by composer Hans Zimmer reportedly suggested it was not eligible due to surpassing the limit on pre-existing music.

Zimmer’s work incorporates thematic elements from his work on the first film. The score was not officially submitted at the time of that report.

Despite this seeming setback, Warner Bros. Pictures isn’t giving up without a fight and Variety reports that Warners has now officially submitted Zimmer’s composition for Academy consideration.

They indicate that the company is “hopeful that his innovative contributions to the film will meet the requirements and earn a nomination”.

The Academy’s Music Branch Oscar shortlist voting period begins on December 9th which is when we’ll likely know if it made it. The 20 shortlisted scores will be revealed on December 17th.
