The Emmy Awards’ estimated audience of 5.9 million watchers on Monday night was significantly lower than the COVID-19-interrupted presentation two years ago, according to the Associated Press.
The presentation recognising television’s best work, where “Ted Lasso” won best comedy and “Succession” won best drama, drew less viewers than the 7.4 million who tuned in in 2021, according to the Nielsen firm.
The Emmys, which are typically shown on Sunday nights, were moved to Monday in order to accommodate NBC’s debut “Sunday Night Football” game the previous evening. But because it was up against a close “Monday Night Football” game, it couldn’t avoid football.
Kenan Thompson of “Saturday Night Live” hosted the Emmys.
With 6.1 million viewers, the previous low point for the Emmys was in 2020 with a significantly scaled-back show due to the pandemic.
Football had an effect, but since cable and streaming services started to predominate the Emmys, ratings for those programmes have been steadily declining. There are less television programmes today than there used to be since there are so many more available, compared to when broadcast television predominated.
The last time the Emmys attracted more than 10 million viewers was in 2018, when 10.2 million watched. In 2000, 21.8 million people watched the Emmys, a number that is certainly unattainable in the future.
