Filtering Your iMessages Is A Good Idea

You can only see unread messages thanks to a new, hidden iOS 16 function.

In addition to several new big features, iOS 16 also brings back the battery percentage indicator and adds the ability to enable haptic feedback for the first time on the stock iPhone keyboard. But the addition to the Messages Filters function was overlooked in all the fanfare.

Since iOS 10, “Filter Unknown Senders” has been a feature that, when turned on, allows you to organise your messages into useful groups. You may filter messages based on contacts in your contact list and communications that are unknown and may be spam, just like you would filter emails or notes.

The new Unread filter in iOS 16 will come in quite helpful for users who receive a lot of messages because it displays all of your unread messages in one big list. To quickly mark all of your messages as read and get rid of the annoying notification banner in the Messages app icon, you may use it to deal with all of your incoming messages at once. It’s particularly helpful if you have old messages that you haven’t seen, which can be hard to spot while browsing through a sea of opened threads.

If you don’t see it on the main Messages page, it will be in the “Unknown & Spam” section. To access the feature, click to Settings > Messages and select the “Filter Unknown Senders” option. Returning to the Messages app will reveal a “Filters” button in the top-right corner. If you’re in India, you’ll also find additional filters for transactions, promotions, and spam messages when you tap on it to view all of the available filters.

When you select “Unread Messages” from this menu, only unread chats will appear. Similar to that, you can easily ignore spam by filtering messages to only come from “Known Senders.”
