First Look at Cillian Murphy as the Father of the Atomic Bomb in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer Film

Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s next film, has released its first look at Cillian Murphy, who portrays the eponymous role in a biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kenneth Branagh and Michael Angarano have joined the cast of Christopher Nolan’s film about the father of the atomic bomb, which has begun filming in New Mexico.

Murphy is shown in the monochrome photograph looking attentively while smoking a cigarette, which is accurate. Oppenheimer was a heavy smoker who finally had throat cancer.

Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, and David Krumholtz round out the film’s star-studded cast.

For the uninitiated, Oppenheimer was one of the founders of the atomic bomb during WWII, but his commitment to the United States was later called into doubt by hawkish government leaders.

The film Oppenheimer is based on Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin’s 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book ‘American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.’

Oppenheimer will be released in theatres on July 21, 2023, by Universal Pictures. The releasing of a film over the summer has long been a Nolan custom. This is his first film outside of Warner Bros. in a long time, following a fight over the studio’s management of its 2021 slate, which went day-and-date with HBO Max.
