Philadelphia activist and rapper Guevara came has shared plans for debut album ‘Goyard Ibn Said’.
An artist deeply embedded in his community, Ghais’ work speaks of Blackness in all its forms, look at the broader capitalist systems that confine us. Working with Fat Possum Records, his recent single ‘Leprosy’ caught our ear, an excellent, multi-faceted audio construction.
Out on January 24th, debut album ‘Goyard Ibn Said’ follows two acclaimed mixtapes, and it finds Ghais adding different layers to his work.
Take new single ‘Camera Shy’. Both revealing and hiding in equal measure, it finds the North Philly artist moving into a new lane. He comments:
“I remember the day I figured out the hook for this beat, I told the voice chat “Yo we got one”. It definitely feels like *the* stylistic shift for me. As if I earned enough XP to unlock hitmaker status lol.“
The track comes with a video shot on film by Rhys Scarabosio, with the director adding:
“Ghais had a natural photographic quality to him you don’t always come by. When light hit him, it wasn’t difficult to find something pleasing. We shot on 16mm film to even further emphasise that star power he holds…”
