Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern deliver an emotional gut punch to Venice as “The Son” receives a ten-minute standing ovation.

The Venice Film Festival was completely destroyed by Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern’s world premiere of Florian Zeller’s “The Son,” which received a 10-minute standing ovation. Both the audience and Jackman were visibly affected by the movie’s reception. In the midst of the applause, Jackman hugged his little co-star Zen McGrath. One emotional sequence in the movie, which is about a heartbreaking family tragedy, caused audible gasps from the audience. Based on this enthusiastic response, Zeller might return with “The Son” for more Oscar glory.

The official synopsis from Sony Pictures Classics describes “The Son” as being about “a family as it comes apart and attempts to get back together again.” Years after his parents’ divorce, Jackman plays a father whose 17-year-old kid moves home with him after realising he can no longer live with his mother (Dern). Beth, played by Vanessa Kirby, is a new partner for Peter, played by Jackson. Peter goes above and above to provide for his son.

Along with Vanessa Kirby, Jackman and Dern attended the Venice premiere. Anthony Hopkins, who won an Oscar for his performance in Zeller’s previous film, “The Father,” missed the Venice Film Festival but nevertheless makes an engaging appearance as Jackman’s distant but opinionated father. While Steve Buscemi was spotted in the theatre, Sarah Ferguson walked the red carpet for the movie. His current film, “The Listener,” is being filmed in Venice.

Peter Debruge, a film critic for Variety, said of the Venice film “The Son”: “Instead of merely tearing us emotionally — which “The Son” will certainly succeed in doing nevertheless,” he continued, “it wants to get viewers thinking…

The anguish of this family becomes our own as we watch “The Son,” and Zeller’s warning becomes unavoidable.

“The Son” is a movie that is definitely up for an Oscar, according to Variety awards editor Clayton Davis, who also noted that Hugh Jackman is in the lead for best actor because to his outstanding work as a father trying to rehabilitate his troubled teenage son in the movie.

With “The Father,” the playwright Zeller had his breakthrough as a director. The film received six Academy Award nominations, including best picture, and Anthony Hopkins, who plays a minor role in “The Son,” won Oscars for best actor and best adapted screenplay. In order to turn “The Son” into a movie, the pair collaborated once more.

After winning the best actress award at the 2020 Venice Film Festival for her role in “Pieces of a Woman,” Kirby’s performance in “The Son” represented another success story for her. Kirby later received a best actress nomination at the Oscars. Dern has achieved success in Venice as well. After the movie’s Venice debut, her performance in Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Store” became a topic of discussion for the Academy Awards. Dern would eventually take home the award for best supporting actress.

On Nov. 11, a few New York and Los Angeles cinemas will debut “The Son.”
