Iconic London store OK’d for £120m retrofit

Relsa Properties has engaged architect Emrys to revive the Grade II listed Art Deco building as a prime office location.

Contractors BAM, Sir Robert McAlpine, ISG and Willmott Dixon Interiors are understood to be in the hunt for the £120m Barkers fit-out job.

The plan for the 570,000 sq ft building involves a large redevelopment of the interior spaces, introducing new walkways and four fully glazed scenic lifts within a reinvented central atrium, as well as a new roof terrace to be added on top.

Planned new internal atrium layout

The client team includes building services engineer Hilson Moran and structural engineer Civic Engineers with RLB as project manager and cost consultant.

Demolition contractor Erith is tipped to take the internal strip-out work.
