Kamila Valieva, a 15-year-old Russian figure skater, will compete at the Channel One Trophy in Saransk this weekend, just over a month after a doping scandal derailed her bid at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Valieva was denied a medal in the women’s singles event in Beijing despite being authorised to compete after testing positive for a prohibited drug in late December.
After helping the Russian Olympic Committee win the team competition, news of the positive test leaked.
Valieva’s doping issue is still being investigated. The Russian anti-doping agency has six months from the date of Valieva’s infraction to decide whether or not to sanction her.
From Friday through Sunday, the Channel One Trophy, a Russian domestic team figure skating tournament, will be contested.
Russians are barred from competing in this week’s World Figure Skating Championships in Montpellier, owing to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow describes as a “special military operation.”
