As empty nesters, Kelly Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos, according to her, are engaging in more daring activities.
In an interview with Insider, Ripa talked about her book of personal essays, “Live Wire: Long-Winded Short Stories,” which was published on Tuesday. “We took our first vacation in June without our children that we’ve ever had,” she said.
Michael, 25, Joaquin, 19, and Lola, 21, are the children of Ripa and Consuelos, who got married in 1996. Since their five-day honeymoon, the couple hadn’t taken a trip without their children, according to Ripa.
She chuckled, “Mark often says a trip is a vacation with your kids. You go on a trip rather than a vacation.
We went on vacation,” Ripa added. “When our eyes opened, we became awake.”
The cohost of “Live! With Kelly and Ryan” stated that there was no schedule other than our own. “As a result, we went on hikes, engaged in conversation, read, watched the evening news, went to late dinners, and slept in. We carried out our whims. We visited a spa. We entered one of those dark, warm saltwater flotation chambers where you simply float while listening to sounds like chimes and other instruments are played.”
Ripa attributes her long-lasting marriage to mastering “the black art of compromise” in her book “Live Wire.”
She said that maintaining a long-term marriage requires a particular level of forbearance, comprehension, and work ethic. “Bravery is also necessary. Long-term relationships are not for the weak of heart, as any couple will tell you. Warriors shouldn’t get married.”
When their youngest kid, Joaquin, went into a dorm at the University of Michigan in 2021, Ripa said she worried she and Consuelos might be headed for a divorce.
As soon as the kids left the house, “it dawned on me that we were in great position to be THAT couple, the one that gets divorced right away,” she wrote.
Instead, their marriage is still solid, and they are enjoying their newly acquired freedom.
Ripa described their recent vacation to Insider as “luxurious and exciting.” “We were not idle. Our children contacted us frequently because they believed we might have missed them or were otherwise bored. We made an effort to act like it wasn’t as much fun without you guys, but in reality, we were having the time of our lives.”
According to Ripa, the couple “have taken up adventure” while their children are away.
Rock climbing and other difficult tasks are examples of things they “never would’ve done previously.”
Although we’ve done other things because the kids wanted to, she remarked, “We’re definitely trying more risky things that we’ve always wanted to try.”
