It has been revealed that Konami has renewed the trademark for its RPG series Suikoden.
The filing was made in June, but it wasn’t widely publicised until this week, when Konami revealed plans to announce a new game based on a classic series at the Tokyo Game Show.
Trademark renewals are not usually an indication of active projects, but Konami has announced that its TGS reveal will be hosted by voice actor Yuji Kaji, who voiced Jowy in Suikoden 2 and Suikoden Tierkreis.
“Voice actor Yuji Kaji will be invited as a guest to represent fans of a series that is loved all over the world on the announcement stage for a new Konami title,” according to a listing for Konami’s TGS session.
According to one publishing source, the reveal is likely to be related to a smaller project, rather than Konami’s larger planned revivals for Castlevania, Silent Hill, and Metal Gear Solid (the first of which is understood to be further along in development), which VGC first reported on last year.
The Suikoden series debuted on the PlayStation in Japan in 1995. It was released in North America in 1996, followed by Europe in 1997. In 1998, the Sega Saturn version was released.
Suikoden 2 was released in Japan in 1998, North America in 1999, and the PAL territories in 2000. The third game in the series was released in both Japan and North America in 2002, but it wasn’t released in the United Kingdom until 2015, when it was made available on the PlayStation Network.
The series’ final instalment was released in all regions in 2006. Aside from rereleases on newer platforms, the series has largely remained dormant since then.
