Last week, a new Instagram account posted its first group of seemingly random photos with the caption “All my girls are glitter girls,” along with the hashtags KiiiKiii and “Who is KiiiKiii?”
The account — reminiscent of aesthetic Tumblr blogs from the late aughts — belongs to KiiiKiii, the latest girl group from Korean entertainment company Starship Entertainment. The teenage pop group, set to drop their debut album on March 24, surprise-posted their first music video Sunday for their prerelease single, “I Do Me” — the unexpected release is a rarity in the world of K-pop. The video, which already has over a million views, was released before the company even announced the group members’ names.
The group’s members were officially introduced by Starship Entertainment — home to groups such as IVEMonsta X and WJSN — Monday night Korean local time. KiiiKiii consists of five members.
Jiyu, 18, serves as a vocalist, rapper, dancer and the group’s leader; she’s been described as leading the group with precision. Leesol, 19, is a rapper and the group’s eldest member; she’s been described as charismatic and chic. Sui, 18, is a vocalist and has been described as having a warm and friendly presence when performing. Haum, 18, is a vocalist and rapper; she’s been described as being an expressive dancer. Kya, 14, is a vocalist and the group’s youngest member; she’s been described as energetic.
“We are all beyond excited just thinking about debuting! It feels like a dream come true for us,” KiiiKiii said in an exclusive statement to THR. “Filming the ‘I Do Me’ music video was such a fun experience, and we hope everyone will give lots of love to ‘I Do Me’!! 💗 Our debut is just around the corner, so wait for us a little more!”
Both the song and music video for “I Do Me” — while still a continuation of the Y2K nostalgia that has been dominating K-pop the past few years — feel like a breath of fresh air. The song is infectiously catchy, a fitting soundtrack for a slumber party or an outdoor adventure. The music video opts for an effortlessly fun and youthful feel, trading in glossy, big sets for scenic mountain views. The group is hoping to usher in a “new wave of self-expression and authenticity” in the genre, according to a release.
KiiiKiii is slated to officially debut in March with their first EP, Uncut Gem. Their prerelease single, “I Do Me,” is available to pre-save now and will be released Feb. 24. Exclusive behind-the-scenes photos from the song’s music video can be found below.
