Sony is slowly revealing more about its PSVR2 headset. Earlier this week, it showed off some cool new user interface features. Meanwhile, Facebook did something that had never been done before: it raised the price of its Meta Quest 2 headset overnight. The standalone device, which came out more than two years ago, will now cost an extra $100, no matter which model you choose.
This means that beginning next month, the 128GB model will cost $399.99 (it used to be $299.99) and the 256GB model will cost $499.99 (it used to be $399.99). It’s a surprising move that will make Sony either sigh with relief or rub its hands together as it continues to keep the price of the potentially expensive PSVR2 a secret.
If you buy a Meta Quest 2 between August 1 and December 31, you can get a free copy of the must-play rhythm game Beat Saber. However, since the trendy slash-em-up usually costs around $29.99, this doesn’t do much to make up for the price increase. Even so, Facebook is quick to point out that the Meta Quest 2 will still be “the most affordable VR headset” on the market.
This is likely to stay the same, since PSVR2 will still need to be connected to a PS5 console in order to work, no matter how much it costs. But it might give Sony a little bit of room to move as it tries to find the best way to bundle its cutting-edge headset and new PSVR2 Sense Controllers.
The first PSVR headset came out in 2016 and cost $399.99. It also came with the PS Camera accessory that was needed. But a more expensive bundle was sold for $499.99. It came with two PS Move controllers and a copy of London Studio’s best tech demo game, PSVR Worlds. At the time, it was the least expensive way to use virtual reality, but you also needed a PS4 console.
Meta Quest 2 has been the market leader for the past few years because it can be played on its own. It’s unlikely that PSVR2 will be able to take that title away from its rival. Sony, on the other hand, is counting on “higher quality” experiences to sell its headset. Horizon: Call of the Mountain is a big first-party game, and Resident Evil Village and other big third-party games are there to support it.
Fans are wondering how much the headset will cost because it has next-generation features like built-in haptic feedback and higher resolution graphics. Sony will feel like it has a little more freedom now, and whether that means it’s relieved or rubbing its hands because Meta Quest 2 was announced last night, those all-important price comparisons are going to look a little better.
What do you think PSVR2 will be like after the price changes for Meta Quest 2? How much do you think the new headset from Sony will cost? In the section below, say something.
