NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams took aim at Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of his prominent political rivals, labeling her a “no-show congresswoman” amid escalating turmoil within his administration.
“I don’t listen to those comments from someone who’s essentially a no-show congresswoman. She’s not providing constituent services in her district,” Adams remarked to a local TV reporter on Wednesday evening, responding to Ocasio-Cortez’s recent call for his resignation.
“As the mayor of New York City, I engage in constituent services every day,” Adams added. “I’m not sure when her constituents last saw her in her district.”
Shortly after his comments, The New York Times reported that Adams had been indicted on federal criminal charges, marking the first time a sitting NYC mayor has faced such charges. Federal authorities have been investigating Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign for potential ties to Turkey. In recent developments, agents have raided homes or confiscated phones from five of his top aides, linked to what appears to be a separate corruption probe.
Adams has maintained his innocence, denying any wrongdoing.
Ocasio-Cortez, one of Congress’s most influential figures, was the first to demand his resignation.
“The flood of resignations and vacancies is threatening government function,” she posted on X. “Nonstop investigations will make it impossible to recruit and retain a qualified administration.”
