Mo’Nique gets the last laugh and announces a Netflix comedy special

After settling a lawsuit with Netflix over discrimination and retaliation, Mo’Nique surprised fans by announcing a film and special with the streaming service.

A Queen of Comedy doesn’t stay down for long. Mo’Nique has been fighting with Netflix for years, but she just announced that Netflix will host her new comedy special. She’ll probably get paid a lot more than that low-ball offer she got back in 2018.

On its official Twitter page, Netflix wrote, “Thrilled to announce that Netflix is the home for the next original stand-up special from the groundbreaking, trailblazing, and iconic Mo’Nique!” In a video that went with the tweet, the comedian herself admitted that she had had problems with the company in the past. “Can you believe this shite?” she laughed. I just got home to watch Netflix.”

Mo’Nique’s lawsuit against Netflix for discrimination and retaliation was settled in June. She had said that Netflix didn’t value Black female comedians enough. (When Wanda Sykes first filed her complaint, she said that Netflix had offered her “less than half” of Mo’Nique’s “low-ball” offer of $500,000.) A representative said that the problem was “amicably resolved,” but who could have known how friendly this business relationship would be?

She also ended a much longer fight with her Precious director Lee Daniels earlier this year. This led to them working together again on his upcoming movie The Deliverance, which you guessed it, is for Netflix. Andra Day plays a mother in The Deliverance who has to fight for her life, her faith, and the souls of her children after finding out that their new home is haunted by a demon. Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis, Caleb McLaughlin, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Demi Singleton, Miss Lawrence, and Anthony B. Jenkins also appear in the movie.

In the video, Mo’Nique talked about both the new movie and the special she will be doing soon. She said, “You won’t want to miss either one, so stay tuned.” “And thank you, my dear children. I really love you.”
