5 mars 2024, TORONTO ― Music Canada is pleased to announce that effective today, official video streams now count toward certification under the Gold and Platinum Program. This expansion recognizes the diversity of artists succeeding through video and celebrates how fans listen to their favorite music.

Music Canada’s gold/platinum certification program was launched in 1975 to celebrate significant music sales in Canada. The program honors artists and their teams who create music that speaks to Canadians and achieves commercial success in Canada.

“This is an exciting time for Music Canada’s Gold/Platinum Program, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. With this launch, we capture the many innovative ways in which Canadians enjoy music, and we recognize deserving artists who have cultivated devoted fan bases through their music videos,” said Patrick Rogerschef de direction, Music Canada.

Under the new guidelines, official videos broadcast in Canada by an approved digital service provider, such as YouTube, Vevo and Apple Music, and made available from 1isJanuary 2020, can be taken into account for obtaining certification.

Additionally, audio and video stream equivalents have been updated to better account for the economic differences between ad-funded and subscription-funded streams. The criteria for obtaining certification remain the same: singles can be certified gold from 40,000 units, platinum from 80,000 units and multiplatinum from 160,000 units. Singles are eligible for Diamond certification from 800,000 units.

For more information on the updated guidelines, including how to apply for certification, please see our FAQ.
