Singer-songwriter kenshi yonezu is behind Medalist’s opening theme song “Bow and Arrow.” Since Medalist is an anime about ice skatingYonezu’s own music video for the song tapped real-life Olympic figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu. The video goes back and forth from Yonezu singing and Hanyu showing off his skills on the ice.

The Olympics’ official site notes“It’s hard to argue that anyone has had a bigger impact on modern-day figure skating than Hanyu Yuzuru, the two-time Olympic champion. . . . Hanyu’s technique is outstanding, but he combines his ability with an astonishing creativity and artistry.”

He got his first gold medal when he was 19, and he made the record books at the same time because he was the first Asian man to take that top prize in Olympic figure skating.

If you want to check out the opening song as it appears for the anime Medalistyou can do so here.

Medalist Opening Theme Song

Medalist started out as a manga series by TSURUMAIKADA. It’s being published in America by Kodansha USA, which gave this description for the first volume:

Medalist Plot

Inori is a little girl who dreams of becoming a figure skater. Yet, the obstacles to this dream feel insurmountable: Inori’s already “too old” (she’s 11); she’s always had trouble at school; and, worst of all, her older sister’s skating dreams ended in failure, so her mother is dead set against putting her other daughter through a similar experience. Still, the rink is the only place Inori can be herself, and she’s out on the ice when a fateful meeting takes place. Tsukasa, a frustrated coach on the edge of giving up competitive skating himself, will join Inori to form an unstoppable duo powered by hard work, transcendent joy, and an unshakeable belief that they can prove everyone wrong.
