Plans put forward for 71-storey Manchester tower

Plans have been unveiled for a 71-storey tower in Manchester, which if given the go-ahead would be the city’s tallest building.

Developer and builder Renaker announced it wants to construct the 71-storey, primarily residential, block incorporating 642 apartments, a top-floor swimming pool for residents and publicly accessible restaurant, also on the top level. It would be located off Melbourne Street and Great Jackson Street in central Manchester.

The building’s design was inspired by a lighthouse, Renaker said in a statement.

The company also plans to deliver four other towers nearby and a public square as part of its development in the Great Jackson Street Development area, which already has several high-rise buildings.

Two of the towers are planned at 47-storeys high, and two at 51 storeys. In total, the five new blocks would provide 2,388 new homes.

Renaker also proposes to narrow the road on Great Jackson Street and introduce traffic-calming measures in order to make the area better for pedestrians to navigate.

In March last yearthe city council approved Renaker’s plans for two other 51-storey towers in the development.

Last Februarythe company won approval for a £741m development of four towers in the nearby Trinity Islands development.
