PSA: Update your Mac and iPhone right away to address a current zero-day security issue.

Even if you like to wait for new iOS and macOS upgrades to stabilise before making the switch, you should update your iPhone and Mac as soon as possible, even if you decide to stick with iOS 15 for the time being. When you install iOS on an iPhone, Apple gives you the option between iOS 15.7 and iOS 16.

iOS 15.7 (and iOS 16) and macOS Monterey 12.6 correct zero-day security vulnerabilities that Apple claims may be actively used by attackers right now, making an update necessary.

According to Bleeping Computer:

The seventh zero-day vulnerability that has been exploited in assaults against iPhones and Macs since the year’s beginning has been fixed by Apple with security patches.

Apple acknowledged they are aware of allegations claiming that this security hole “may have been actively exploited” in security warnings released on Monday.

A maliciously constructed programme may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges thanks to the flaw (tagged as CVE-2022-32917).

With the correct mix of exploits, an attacker is able to perform a variety of things when they can “execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges.”

There are a lot of devices that are vulnerable.

Using macOS Big Sur 11.7 and macOS Monterey 12.6 on all Macs
from the iPhone 6s, all iPhone models
All iPads, including the iPad Air 2, iPad 5, iPad mini 4, and iPod Touch (7th-gen)
According to the website, Apple has purposefully been coy with the little information it has so far shared.

Apple hasn’t yet provided any details about these assaults, despite the fact that the company acknowledged active exploitation of this vulnerability in the wild.

Apple’s decision to withhold this information suggests that it wants to provide as many users as possible the opportunity to fix their devices before other attackers create their own exploits and begin employing them in attacks on vulnerable Macs and iPhones.

According to Bleeping Computer, Apple has already fixed eight zero-day vulnerabilities this year.

It corrected two zero-day flaws in WebKit (CVE-2022-32894) and the iOS Kernel in August (CVE-2022-32893).
Apple fixed two zero-day flaws in the AppleAVD and the Intel Graphics Driver in March (CVE-2022-22675).
Apple provided security fixes in February to address yet another WebKit zero-day flaw that had been used in attacks against iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Apple fixed two additional exploited zero-days that allowed for tracking web surfing activity and kernel privilege code execution in January (CVE-2022-22587) (CVE-2022-22594).
It’s best practise to update your iPhone and other Apple devices as quickly as possible because the majority of vulnerabilities are utilised in targeted assaults, however some are more often used.

Choose between iOS 15.7 and iOS 16 by going to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone. Go to > About this Mac > Software Update on your Mac.
