Removable back glass is a feature of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus for simpler repairs.

According to TechCrunch and CNET, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models have a detachable back glass layer for simpler repairs. Since the iPhone 4S, these iPhone models are the first to be simply opened from the device’s rear.

Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers must open the device from the display side, disassemble the parts, and install a “iPhone Rear System” part, which is an iPhone enclosure with every component except the display and rear camera, in order to replace the back glass on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models. As long as the customer’s original display and rear camera are undamaged, this part is attached to them.

Apple-approved specialists simply replace the complete unit for the iPhone 11 and older models with shattered back glass. The new process for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will save Apple money and be better for the environment.

Screen repairs shouldn’t be hampered by this move because early teardowns of the iPhone 14 show that the handset can still be opened from the display side as well. Reviews failed to note the readily removable back glass panel of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, indicating that the modification only applies to the regular models.

For the parts and labour to replace the cracked rear glass of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, respectively, Apple Stores in the US will charge $169 and $199. The cost is $29 for both models if the buyer has AppleCare+ protection for their iPhone. At Apple Authorized Service Providers, these costs may be different.

Customers will start receiving their iPhone 14 orders on Friday, and the iPhone 14 Plus will be available on October 7.
