Rockstar says that major Red Dead Online support will end.

As work on GTA6 moves forward.

Rockstar has told Red Dead Online fans not to expect any more major updates while the company continues to work on Grand Theft Auto 6.

It’s bad news for Red Dead Online players, who have been complaining for a while that Rockstar hasn’t given the game as much attention as GTA Online, which makes more money.

Now, Rockstar has explained how it plans to keep Red Dead Online alive while putting GTA6 in the spotlight.

“Over the past few years, we’ve been steadily shifting more development resources toward the next Grand Theft Auto game, knowing more than ever that we need to exceed players’ expectations and make this next game the best it can be,” Rockstar wrote. “As a result, we’re in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.”

Rockstar said that because of these changes, there will no longer be “major themed content updates like in past years.”

Instead, Red Dead Online players can expect events that highlight the content they already have, as well as “seasonal special events and improvements to the experience.” This year, there will also be some new Telegram Missions.

Red Dead Online fans said this week that they were going to hold an in-game funeral for the live service to mark what they said was “one year of [the game] being abandoned.”

In response to Rockstar’s announcement, a popular fan-run Twitter account called Red Dead News said, “Rockstar’s management of Red Dead Online has been a series of failures, from the botched implementation of a premium currency and content passes to game-breaking bugs that still exist and a complete lack of protection for PC players against modders.”

“That’s not even counting the false promises about the content and the lack of communication outside of those,” the account said. “Rockstar could have made today’s announcement in February after the ‘next’ GTA announcement. Why make fans wait? It’s bad manners.”

In February of this year, Rockstar said that work on GTA 6 was “active” and “well underway.” This was in response to a Bloomberg report that said the game wouldn’t come out until at least 2024.
