Scans of the AirPods Pro 2 indicate a possible covert function for the new lanyard loop.

Apple released the AirPods Pro 2 last Friday, marking the first updated iteration since their initial release in 2019. The charging case that comes with it has undergone some major changes, including the addition of a new lanyard holster, Find My Location support, and built-in speakers.

 

There appears to be more to the new lanyard holster than first appears in a new CT scanning image of the Lumafield AirPods Pro 2 that provides a glimpse inside the charging case.

 

The interior structure of the new AirPods Pro 2 charging case is nearly identical to that of the first generation, according to the CT scan. Along with magnets to hold the lid closed and each of the earphones in place, the primary logic board is surrounded by two batteries. In order to support MagSafe charging, there are four magnets positioned around the wireless charging coil.

 

However, when you examine the metal eyelet on the charging case’s side, things start to get interesting. Apple claims that this is only for the lanyard holster, however the CT scans indicate otherwise:

 

On the side of the case, a new metal eyelet has been added. It is 4 mm deep and 18 mm long, with a hidden tail that is attached to a metal pad around the Lightning port, according to Apple, but it also seems to have another use. It might be an antenna to help with better “Find My” tracking.

 

It is yet unknown if this is indeed the case. There will probably be a physical deconstruction by the iFixit team at some time, which could reveal more. However, it would seem reasonable that Apple would have to modify the case in order to fully support Find My.
