Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the director of MS. MARVEL, will direct Damon Lindelof’s upcoming STAR WARS film.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the director of Ms. Marvel, is leaving the MCU to work on Damon Lindelof’s (Watchmen) upcoming Star Wars film. After the jump, you can find out what’s new…

With Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron becoming the latest Star Wars film to fail due to “creative differences” with Lucasfilm, the franchise’s future in theaters is in jeopardy. After all, neither Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige’s nor Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi’s films appear to be on the horizon.

However, Deadline has confirmed that Lost and Watchmen showrunner Damon Lindelof is working on a big screen Star Wars project for the studio.

The trade confirms that Lindelof is developing the film, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy of Ms. Marvel set to direct. The prolific writer is co-writing the untitled project, though the report does not identify who that person is.

While this all sounds exciting, it’s best to keep your expectations in check for the time being. While this Star Wars film appears to be nearing completion, insiders reveal that the script is still being written, implying that we’re still a long way from seeing the cameras roll.

“Sources add that it was important to Lucasfilm and Lindelof that a director be brought on so that person’s own vision for where they see this story heading gets included in the script,” according to the report.

Some obvious plot details have emerged since this news broke, and it appears that this one is moving much faster than those being worked on by Feige (who has hired Loki writer Michael Waldron to pen the script) and Waititi. On his script, the latter is working with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917).

Obaid-Chinoy, as previously stated, directed several episodes of Ms. Marvel, but she is also known for her Oscar-winning documentary shorts Saving Face and A Girl in the River, The Price of Forgiveness. She was also recently tapped to direct Will Smith’s Brilliance for Paramount.
