Funky Qla says he enjoys celebrating his hometown through his music.
MUSIC genres in Mzansi and the world have changed over the years.
While every genre has its season, some artists keep up with the times.
This producer and DJ doesn’t want to limit himself; he wants his music to stay relevant across seasons.
Sphamandla Qiniso Ngema, known as Funky Qla, enjoys embracing his hometown Durban but also explores other genres.
He spoke to Daily Sun about his latest EP, Dark or Durban, and said it captures everyday moments in Durban.
Funky Qla is known for his gqom house songs and has worked with big names such as Sir Trill and Zee Nxumalo. He said making his EP was challenging and financially demanding.
“Some challenges I faced while recording my EP involved the artists I was working with, so I decided to do a camp where we recorded for five days,” he said.

He said he needed courage to push his EP forward.
“My spirit and my team kept me going. There was a time I wanted to give up, and they gave me the camp idea,” he shared.
Even though he likes gqom, Funky Qla has also evolved over the years.
“I think every genre has its time and season. There was a time when gqom was trending. I feel like people who followed it or only wanted to do it have now given up,” he said.
He said he started with the genre but ventured into other music.
“I was able to produce gqom, amapiano, and Afro-tech. That’s why I can’t even explain my sound; it’s different genres at the same time,” he said.
