Maskandi musician Mthandeni SK Manqele says he didn’t receive any help from 70s and 90s generation.

“THANK you, 2Ks and late 90s. As for the 80s and 70s, f**k off!”

These were the words of multi-award-winning Maskandi musician, Mthandeni SK Manqele.

The Paris hitmaker from eMdletsheni in KZN is facing backlash after making controversial remarks implying that those from the 80s and 70s don’t deserve his gratitude.

The 36-year-old singer-songwriter has been trending on social media following his selection as the winner of the Song of the Year on Ukhozi FM on 31 December 2024, alongside amapiano sensation MaWhoo.

These remarks have left social media users divided.

In a video, Mthandeni SK is seen praising the 2Ks (people born in the 2000s) for their contributions and criticising individuals born in the 1970s and 1980s).

Mthandeni said: “There’s nothing I can thank the 80s for, and the 70s didn’t help me in any way. Maybe I can start appreciating the late 90s. But the 2Ks have been a big help because they are more aware of online things and have access to social networks. They research people before making judgements. The 2Ks discovered that Mthandeni is a cool guy. Thank you, 2Ks and late 90s. 80s, forget it. 70s, forget it. You played with me with your maskandi.”

When Daily Sun attempted to contact Mthandeni SK, his agent, who did not provide his name, refused to comment.

“We are not joking here; we are working, and we stand by what we said,” the agent said.

Mthandeni SK received more than 900 000 votes on Ukhozi FM for his well-loved song Gucci, featuring MaWhoo, which was named the most favourite song of 2024.

On 4 January, Mthandeni hosted the Mthandeni Summer Experience Event in his hometown. The event featured a star-studded line-up, including Lwah Ndlunkulu, Sjava, Mzukulu, DJ Tira, MaWhoo, Gatsheni, Duncan, Big Nuz, and more.
