Whoopi Goldberg

“That Was Not a Fat Suit, That Was Me,” Whoopi Goldberg responds to a film critic who said she wore a “Till” fat suit.

On October 1, Whoopi Goldberg attended the New York Film Festival for the global premiere of her new drama “Till,” a biographical drama by Chinonye Chukwu about Mamie Till’s fight for justice after her son Emmett was killed. In the movie, Goldberg plays Alma Carthan, the grandmother and mother of Mamie Till and Emmett. One “Till” review criticised Goldberg for appearing in a fat suit, however the Academy Award winner did not appear in a fat suit. On “The View” on October 3, Goldberg criticised the review.

In her review, a young woman who works for one of the periodicals got sidetracked by my fat suit, according to Goldberg. I don’t really care what you thought of the film, but you should know that was me, not a big costume. Steroids were involved. Recall last year. You must not watch the show, otherwise you would realise that wasn’t a fat suit.

It’s acceptable to not like a movie, but you should leave other people’s appearances out, said Goldberg. Observe the acting alone. Ask someone if you have a question. You probably didn’t intend to be insulting.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Goldberg was commenting on The Daily Beast’s review of “Till.” The review has subsequently been changed to clarify that Whoopi Goldberg claims she was not wearing a fat suit, and an editor’s note supports this. The paragraph in question has been removed.

In particular, Danielle Deadwyler’s lead performance in “Till” has made it out of the New York Film Festival as an Oscar contender in the best actress category. Clayton Davis, an awards analyst for Variety, praised Goldberg’s performance in his review of the picture.

Whoopi Goldberg was a formidable actor before she began co-hosting “The View,” he says, and “Till” will serve as a reminder to viewers of that. “Goldberg produced the movie and plays Emmett’s grandma in two memorable scenes in ‘Till. Each one demonstrates the kind of deliberation and accuracy that could only be attained by experts like Goldberg. Goldberg is a deserving addition to the supporting actress field even if she may not have enough screen time to receive a nod.

“Till” will be released by United Artists Releasing on October 14 in American theatres.
