The 2020 Assassin’s Creed Problem Is Finally Being Fixed

Look, some occupations are simply more important than others, OK?

I know this isn’t the most pressing issue confronting the video game community, but I find it amusing that someone at Ubisoft has finally gotten around to fixing a bug that has impacted one specific version of Assassin’s Creed on one specific platform and has been bugging people (or perhaps just one person?) for years.

We actually covered this back in November 2020, when it was revealed that the PlayStation 4 version of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate had some strange shadow issues if you tried to play it on the PlayStation 5. It was well recognized, so much so that anyone attempting to start the game was greeted with a prompt that reads:

Still, as I already stated, that is not a major concern. But it was still an issue, one that would have been logged someplace at Ubisoft, far enough down the priority list that it didn’t get rectified at the time, but on the list anyway, waiting to be addressed by someone, anybody, whenever they had the time.

This week is that moment. The series’ Twitter account said earlier today that an update would be released tomorrow, particularly tackling this bug:

We’re pleased to announce that Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will receive an update for PlayStation 4 tomorrow, February 23. This update will address flickering issues when playing on the PlayStation 5.

Thank you for reminding me to go back and watch it again. Not because I want to play it without flickering—I never had it on PS4, but I have it on PC!—but because this is a vastly unappreciated chapter in the series, and one I’d like to revisit in the aftermath of the more current games being a little too much.
