“The Batman” soared to the top of the box office, grossing $128.5 million in its debut weekend, more than any other film this year.
According to Variety, the three-hour superhero reimagining, which stars Robert Pattinson as Gotham’s gloomy caped crusader, is the second pandemic-era film to gross moreover $100 million in a single weekend.
The Warner Bros. picture, which also stars Zoe Kravitz as a sultry Catwoman, took the top place above Mark Wahlberg’s treasure-hunt drama “Uncharted.”
“It’s exciting to see the public love the film,” Warner Bros. head of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein told the entertainment news source. “This bodes well for its big-screen run.” It helps that word of mouth is so powerful.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which had a $260 million opening weekend in December, was the only COVID-times film to make more than “The Batman,” according to the site.
“The Batman” is said to have cost $200 million to make and has received mostly excellent reviews so far. According to The New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski, it’s a sombre reminder of the city’s current crime epidemic.
