The first augmented reality (AR) short film on Disney+ is called “Remembering,” and it stars Brie Larson.

Today is Disney+ Day, and as one of the celebration’s benefits, the company is providing Disney+ subscribers with a brand-new augmented reality (AR) experience in conjunction with the short film “Remembering,” which was written and directed by filmmaker Elijah Allan-Blitz and stars and is produced by “Captain Marvel” Brie Larson. The eight-minute film has an accompanying augmented reality software that customers can use to watch an extended version of the film on a smaller screen by scanning their TV with an iOS device.

In “Remembering,” Larson plays a writer who loses an idea after being distracted by her phone, which calls. Young actress Dusty Peak plays the writer’s inner child, who aids in finding her lost idea, which is portrayed as a flying and conversing cluster of light and is voiced by Larson as well. The “World of Imagination,” a magical wonderland filled of rainbows, shooting stars, and dolphin-shaped clouds, is where the inner child resides.

The purpose of the film is to start a conversation on the importance of remembering your younger self and all the creativity you once possessed. This raises questions about the origin of ideas and the reasons why adults sometimes find it difficult to employ their imaginations.

Disney has produced a lot of augmented reality (AR) experiences over the years, but this is the first one that directly links to Disney+ platform content, the firm told TechCrunch. It’s an experiment to investigate if augmented reality (AR) technology can improve movie storytelling even for people who are watching in their living homes.

By allowing viewers to interact with “The World of Imagination” with their cellphones, the “Remembering” AR component itself aims to make the movie more engaging for viewers.

The “Remembering: The AR Experience” app, created by technology studio Magnopus and Walt Disney StudioLab, can be downloaded on iPhones or iPads by Disney+ subscribers in order to participate in the augmented reality experience. Users can either search the App Store or go to disney.com/remembering to find the new app.

The app should remain open while viewers watch the movie. The AR software uses Apple’s ShazamKit technology to listen for audio cues. Around three minutes into the video, the device will start to buzz, telling users to hold up their phone and point it at their TV. Then, a 10-second countdown before the AR experience starts.

Users will see a waterfall cascading down to the floor as well as dolphins, butterflies, trees, vegetation, illuminating flowers, and other wonderful digital components when they point their iPhone or iPad at the TV.

Throughout the event, the movie keeps playing. A shooting star sweeps across the screen, dolphin-shaped clouds move in the sky, and then dive into “The River of Life” as Dusty’s character talks about “The World of Imagination,” which you can view on the TV or on your iPhone or iPad.

We personally used the app and found no problems. The AR experience, though, was brief and you couldn’t interact with the digital components. However, you are free to opt to restart and replay it as often as you wish.

The AR app is only available for iOS devices. The app’s availability on Android smartphones has not yet been officially announced. It is not necessary for viewers to download the app in order to watch the movie; they can opt to watch it passively instead.

Filmmaker Elijah Allan-Blitz, a former kindergarten instructor, wants to investigate the idea of what imaginative play looks like from a child’s perspective. He spent two years working on the project, first developing the plot utilising AR and then drawing on Peak’s theories about imagination. The actual film was then shot at NantStudios on a volumetric stage. The crew produced the light and movement for the personified “concept” using live on-set projection mapping.

Instead of having to fake, Brie and Dusty could now act while taking in the “beautiful surroundings all around them,” according to the director.

The movie “Remembering” is the first of its type, and according to Allan-Blitz, it represents the way people will interact with entertainment in the future. “The AR experience allows viewers to engage with it more deeply and departs from the normal passive experience of streaming. As a result, it will stick in your memory on a more profound level than merely something you view. Actually, you did it,” he said.

Although “Remembering” is intended for everyone to view, the director remarked that its true purpose is to act as a “Trojan horse” that inspires people to reconnect with their younger selves.

What Larson described as “taking what makes art so amazing and makes me feel like my job is worth anything” is that it “speaks the unspeakable, shows the unfathomable, and asserts that you can engage in it rather than merely see it from the outside.” “Thanks for asking. You’re welcome to take part. And that invitation is only the start of a conversation that I hope will lead to many more about how we might enhance storytelling and become ultimately more connected.

The Great Unknown Productions, the film and television business founded by Larson and Allan-Blitz with the goal of utilising technology to further tales, just released “Remembering.” “The Messy Truth,” a virtual reality series that the business had previously developed, won an Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Original Interactive Program.

Even though the pair did not claim to have prior AR experience, they are undoubtedly considering it.

Disney+ declined to comment on whether it would eventually add more AR-capable features.

The streamer assured us that “time will tell.”

Though rivals have used the technology to sell their projects rather than actually improve them, the streamer is not the first to do so.

With the help of the DracARys app, HBO Max recently marketed its “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon,” which allowed fans to raise a virtual dragon. The streamer and Snap collaborated to design a dragon that can breathe fire for Snapchat Lenses. For All Mankind: Time Capsule was an augmented reality app that Apple TV+ released that allowed viewers to interact with virtual items from the show, including photos, a mixtape, letters, and more. Additionally, Netflix provided virtual augmented reality (AR) experiences for Emmy voters using digital Easter eggs from Netflix original programmes like “Ozark,” “The Crown,” and “Stranger Things.”

The release of the new “Remembering” AR app coincides with Disney’s ongoing experimentation with its streaming initiatives. Disney+ has recently experimented with livestreaming, revealed a more affordable ad-supported tier, and started investigating an Amazon Prime-like membership that connects streaming to shopping.

On Disney+, you can view the short film “Remembering” on any device, including Apple TVs, Roku players, Amazon Fire TVs, and more.
