The new game that EA and Koei Tecmo are working on is being dubbed “the next great hunting game.” When I first read that description, I immediately thought of the popular Big Buck Hunter arcade hunting game series, in which you shoot wild animals. However, after seeing the concept art (above), though, and knowing who is making it, I’m guessing that this game will actually resemble Capcom’s Monster Hunter series much more.
This new game is an original IP that “delivers a truly AAA experience centred on fantasy feudal Japan,” according to a press release from EA and Koei Tecmo. It will be created by Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force, famed for creating the “musou” action games Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors. Omega Force is “combining their renowned aptitude for combat gameplay with unexpected and novel concepts,” according to a statement from EA executive Jeff Gamon.
These elements, together with the description of the game as a “hunting game,” lead me to believe that the creators are likely working on something with gameplay similar to Monster Hunter, in which you collaborate with other players to defeat enormous creatures. On the other hand, Big Buck Hunter is essentially glorified target practise. If this turns out to be teasing a Japanese video game version of Cabela’s, I’ll update the story to let you know. An EA spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.
Unfortunately, EA and Koei Tecmo did not reveal much more about the game, so we are unsure of its release date or potential platform compatibility. Gamon, on the other hand, claims that the game will be unveiled “later this month,” so we might not have to wait too long to find out more.
The EA Originals label, which it has previously used to distribute independent games like It Takes Two and Knockout City, will be attached to this new game.
