The Star that Disney’s latest animated musical is about is what its heroes are constantly hoping for.
When you make a wish on a star,
Disney’s newest animated film, Wish, explores the history of the magical wishing star, one of the studio’s most recognisable icons.
Kinda kidding, of course. The “wish upon a star” theme that appears in numerous films is undoubtedly an inspiration for the film. A young heroine named Asha wishes on a star in the kingdom, seeking for direction. And lo and behold, a star (called Star) descends to the kingdom of Rosas to assist Asha, much like in Neil Gaiman’s Stardust.
Wish will be created in a brand-new aesthetic that seems to incorporate both 3D animation and watercolour components. With music by Julia Michaels, it will be a musical. Anita DeBose, who played Anita in the 2021 West Side Story, will provide the voice for Asha, and Disney stalwart Alan Tudyk, who has performed numerous animal sidekicks including Raya and the Last Dragon’s Tuk Tuk and Moana’s Hei-Hei, will do the same for a goat named Valentino. Additionally, if you enjoy Disney Easter eggs, the movie is said to have a lot of them.
Chris Buck, the director of Frozen, and Fawn Veerasunthorn, the writer of the Raya and the Last Dragon narrative, will helm the film. The release of Wish is scheduled for November 2023.
