The trailer for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” got 172 million views in 24 hours, making it one of Marvel’s most popular (EXCLUSIVE)

A source close to Marvel told Variety that the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” teaser trailer got 172 million views in its first 24 hours. This makes it one of the best trailer debuts for a superhero movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The “Wakanda Forever” teaser got almost twice as many views as the original “Black Panther” teaser, which got 88 million views in 2017.

The teaser also made social media go crazy, with over 893,000 mentions of “Black Panther” topics. After the release of the teaser, Chadwick Boseman, Namor, Shuri, T’Challa, Ryan Coogler, and Angela Bassett all became national trending topics, and the hashtag #WakandaForever was the most popular for over five hours.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” got 172 million views in its first 24 hours. This makes it one of the best trailer launches for a standalone Marvel movie, along with “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (with 355.5 million views, the most ever) and “Thor: Love and Thunder” (209 million views). Four “Avengers” trailers also got more views: the teaser for “Avengers: Endgame” (289 million), the final trailer for “Avengers: Endgame” (268 million), the teaser for “Avengers: Infinity War” (230 million), and the final trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War” (179 million).

It’s important to note that, unlike many of these other Marvel movies, the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” teaser came out around 9:20 pm ET on a Saturday night. That’s not really the best time for a trailer to come out, since most come out on weekday mornings and take advantage of the fact that people will watch them again at work.

With the teaser, we got our first look at the sequel to “Black Panther,” which is the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The video shows the country of Wakanda going to war with an Atlantean army led by the scary Namor (Tenoch Huerta). Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba Winston Duke, and Angela Bassett are playing the same characters they did in the first “Black Panther.” They are joined by Michaela Coel, Dominique Thorne, Alex Nivilani, and Mabel Cadena, who are all new to the series.

The success of the teaser led Hollywood Records and Marvel Music to release the movie’s prologue soundtrack on Monday. The soundtrack has Tems’ version of “No Woman, No Cry” by Bob Marley, which got a lot of attention in the teaser trailer.

Before the Hall H crowd at Comic-Con saw the teaser, director Ryan Coogler and several members of the cast took the stage to introduce the film and talk about the legacy of the late Chadwick Boseman, who played the lead role in the original 2018 “Black Panther” and died in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer.

Coogler told the crowd, “It will be hard to top that, but we’ll try.”

On Nov. 11, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will be in theatres.
