US-sold iPhone 14 models won’t have a SIM card tray.

Apple claims that a single iPhone 14 or 14 Pro can accommodate a minimum of eight eSIMs.

 

The iPhone 14 series was announced last week at Apple’s Far Out event, and the majority of the devices will go on sale this week. However, you should be aware that the iPhone 14 will not have a real SIM card slot if you live in the United States and intend to purchase one.

 

The iPhone 14 will, of course, have a SIM card, but it will be an embedded SIM (eSIM), which eliminates the need to physically purchase and insert a SIM card into your smartphone by saving you the trip to the store. Numerous significant US carriers, including AT&T and Verizon, also support eSIM.

Of fact, eSIM support has been a feature of Apple smartphones since 2018, thus the iPhone 14 is not the first one to provide it. But up until the iPhone 14, anybody who bought an iPhone X series (or newer) had the choice to use both a physical and an eSIM at simultaneously.

 

The iPhone 14 can store “at least eight eSIMs, with up to two active at once,” an Apple representative told The Verge.

 

eSIM has a few advantages because it makes it easier (to a certain extent) to switch networks or test out a new mobile carrier with few restrictions. Additionally, you can move your eSIM between iPhones using a Bluetooth connection thanks to the most recent significant iPhone update, iOS 16. However, a significant disadvantage of an eSIM is the potential difficulty in switching from an iPhone to an Android phone.
