Tickets went on sale for Universal Pictures’ “Wicked” film adaptation the other day and the public has responded in force.
Fandango reports that this first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical has had the second-best year-to-date pre-sales of any film title, behind only Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
That film posted a first-day haul of $96.1 million and three-day take of $211.4 million.
“Wicked” is also the best PG-rated first-day ticket pre-seller of 2024 for Fandango, and the No. 3 best PG-Rated first-day ticket pre-seller of all time behind only “Frozen II” and the live-action “The Lion King”.
This suggests that “Wicked” is set to debut to over $100 million on its opening weekend. The film faces direct competition from Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” which also had tickets go on sale this week, though numbers on that one haven’t been reported.
Both films arrive on November 22nd and come ahead of Disney’s “Moana 2” on November 27th leading into the Thanksgiving weekend with all three films set to create a busy long holiday box-office.
