Young children should continue to wear masks, according to the city’s new health commissioner.

The city’s new health commissioner feels that mask requirements for young children should be maintained forever – a stance that is in direct contradiction with that of Mayor Eric Adams, who recently said that youngsters will not be required to wear masks for much longer.

CBS News reports that Dr Ashwin Vasan, who took over as commissioner on Friday, advised that children under the age of five should continue to wear masks since they are not yet mature enough to be vaccinated, as he did during his first news conference as commissioner. He also mentioned the increased hospitalisation rates for children under the age of five who have COVID-19.

“At this time, I believe it is endless,” Vasan remarked of the situation. “Those who have attempted to foresee the future of this epidemic have ended up with egg on their faces, and I’m not going to do that today,” says the author.

In his words, “As the parent of a 2 1/2-year-old and two other older children, I want to ensure that they are as secure as possible.” “I would do everything to be able to take my kid to daycare without having to worry about him getting sick.” In my capacity as a scientist, as a doctor, and as an epidemiological, I am concerned about his safety.”

A different perspective seemed to be expressed on Thursday by Adams, who earlier this month eliminated the city’s Key2NYC vaccination requirement for eating and other indoor activities.

Upon being accosted by an enraged parent who demanded that he revoke the mask rule for toddlers, he said, “I’ve got this. “They shall be revealed in their true identities.”

The resurgence of the argument about masks coincides with the continued rise in popularity of the new Omicron subvariant BA.2. Despite the fact that it does not seem to produce more severe sickness, research indicates that it is more transmissible.

“Our stats are being closely monitored, and we’ll keep you informed as to what they tell us in the future. While at the same time, we are aware that the rise in instances in other regions of the globe might be concerning,” Vasan explained.
