ZMicro to install rugged computing on SOCOM SkyWarden aircraft

Californian city of SAN DIEGO For the U.S. Special Operations Command’s Armed Overwatch programme, ZMicro will deliver rugged computing systems for AT-802U Sky Warden aircraft on behalf of the manufacturer L3Harris, the company said in a statement.

Two ZM3 ultra-lightweight servers designed for mission management and situational awareness will be installed by ZMicro. The storage docking unit in the cockpit, which features four ZMicro TranzPak 1 ultra-compact NVMe SSDs, is connected to by optical fibre, according to the announcement.

According to the statement, Sky Warden aircraft are used by SOCOM to conduct intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions in “austere, disaggregated combat settings with limited infrastructure.”

According to the manufacturer, the ZM3 supports up to 96G DDR4 RAM and a 16-core Intel Xeon D processor via a Type 7 COM Express module.

It also supports a second PCI Express card for customised user expansion in addition to double-wide COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) high-end graphics cards.
