Flaunt Weeekly
Mumbai-based alternative singer-songwriter Kairvina unveils the music video for her recently released track, “Eternal,” examining life through a looking glass of perplexity tinted with self-deprecation.
Kairvina explains, “‘Eternal’ is a song about fighting the war in your head when things don’t seem to be going your way. It’s both a point of clarity and a point of no return. I wrote this song when I was 19 and had just experienced a terrible day that I, funnily enough, can’t remember anymore. The song started with the guitar riff you hear at the end of verse one, and the lyrics seemed to pour out of me like I’d been writing them my whole life (must’ve been a real bad day, huh). Back then, the track felt too vulnerable, so I decided to shelve it.”
She goes on, “A few years down the line, turns out 20-something me still has terrible days, so I figured what the heck, let’s release ‘Eternal.’”
Kairvina fell under the spell of music early on, writing introspective songs and singing about relationships and heartache. She taught herself to play guitar, and later, in an act of blind trust, moved to Los Angeles, where she immersed herself in musicstarted a band, performed myriad gigs, and established her unique sound.
Her sound merges elements of pop, rock, soul, folk, and hints of Indian classical music into alluring concoctions, full of profound emotions.
Mastered by Ayan De, “Eternal” features Joshua Singh on bass, keys, and percussion, with Singh and Kairvina on guitars.
Kairvina confides, “Strings, acoustic guitars, and soft, folky percussions, all help in creating a tender yet cinematic atmosphere for the song. The lyrics that used to feel heavy, now live within the rise and fall of the arrangement. Joshua and I wanted to maintain the chaos of the riff as well as the sensitivity of the words and I think we found a sweet spot.”
Gentle, chiming tones form the intro as Karivina’s dreamy, musing vocals imbue the lyrics with delicious, brooding surfaces. Layered strings and soft guitars give the melody a gleaming, gliding flow, while percussive accents infuse the tune with finessed, rhythmic pulses. There’s a beguiling, haunting sensation within the song.
“I don’t know how much I can take / If nothing moves, I’ll always be afraid / I’m fighting battles, and they’re internal / And all I wonder is if / This is Eternal / Is this Eternal.”
Reaching deep into her innermost feelings, with “Eternal,” Kairvina reveals her emotional vulnerability and lingering uncertainties. It’s a beautiful, poignant song.
